Records of the Knox County Probate Court go back as far as 1860. Prior to that date the records were filed in either Waldo or Lincoln Counties.
Rules and operations of the Probate Court system are governed by the Maine Revised Statutes Annotated. The Probate Court handles all estates, both formal and informal; guardianships for both adults and minors; conservatorships, changes of name; adoptions; and other legal matters. Both the Probate Judge and the Registrar of Probate are elected positions.
Probate Court in Knox County is held on the first and the third Wednesday of each month, and at other times as necessary.
