Overview

Records of the Knox County Probate Court go back as far as 1860. Prior to that date the records were filed in either Waldo or Lincoln Counties.

Rules and operations of the Probate Court system are governed by the Maine Revised Statutes Annotated. The Probate Court handles all estates, both formal and informal; guardianships for both adults and minors; conservatorships, changes of name; adoptions; and other legal matters. Both the Probate Judge and the Registrar of Probate are elected positions.

Probate Court in Knox County is held on the first and the third Wednesday of each month, and at other times as necessary.

Location

The Probate Court and Registry are located in the county courthouse at 62 Union Street in Rockland Maine. The offices are on the first floor of the building.

Business Hours

The Probate Office is open to the public Monday through Friday weekly, except during holidays. The hours of the office are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily.

Forms Available

Forms are available at the Probate Office for purchase. Please call the Registry or e-mail the court for a complete list of forms, fee schedule, and filing fees. Copies of most Probate Court records are available for a minimal fee.
